The use of animals in military operations isn't a modern thing. From elephants striking roman legions and messenger pigeons to dogs that accompany everyday to leading special units.

Dogs are used to find traces of enemies running away, detection of explosives or weapons and drugs hidden warehouses. Sometimes simply, as combat assault dogs (aka CAD), or "motherf****r hair missiles" as some call them. It makes them very important elements within their units, being especially trained and given special affection from the unit.
