Top 5 Most Powerful Armies in Latin America (2025 Edition)

The Global Firepower Index 2025 ranks the military capabilities of 145 nations based on more than 60 factors, including logistics, air, land, and naval power, industrial resources, finances, and geography.

1- Brazil

This South American nation remains the dominant military power in the region. According to the GFP 2025 report, Brazil ranks 11th out of 145 countries, with a PwrIndx score of 0.2415 (the lower, the stronger). Its strength comes from a combination of a large population, a significant economy, integrated armed forces, and a strong presence across air, land, and sea.

Although no unified public figure exists for all current categories (reserves, tanks, total defense budget), Brazil continues to maintain high defense spending, modernization of its air and naval forces, and an international role through blocs such as BRICS and UN peacekeeping operations.
Note: The previous ranking of 17th place has now been surpassed by the 11th position in 2025. .

2- México

Mexico remains the second military power in Latin America according to GFP 2025, ranking 32nd out of 145 countries, with a PwrIndx score of 0.5965.
The Mexican Armed Forces play a key role in internal security, anti-narcotics operations, and border patrol. Although its heavy arsenal cannot compete on the same level as Brazil’s, its population size, economy, and strategic role keep it firmly in this position.

3- Argentina

Argentina ranks 33rd out of 145 countries according to GFP 2025, with a PwrIndx of 0.6013.
Despite economic challenges, its armed forces maintain modernization programs, regional participation, and a record of international cooperation. Its positioning allows it to hold the third spot in Latin America.

4- Colombia

Colombia ranks 46th out of 145 nations in GFP 2025, with a PwrIndx of 0.8353.
While numerically lower than the top three Latin American nations, Colombia remains highly relevant in the region due to its large active military population, operational experience, internal security role, and ongoing modernization efforts.
Although its reserves, equipment, and budget may not match the top three, its operational context gives it unique strategic weight in the region.

5- Chile

Rounding out the Latin American top five, Chile stands out with a 47th place ranking out of 145, and a PwrIndx score of 0.8361 (Global Firepower 2025).
Chile’s consistent investment in technology, international cooperation, and modern military structure allows it to close the list of the five most relevant Latin American powers in defense and military capability.
