The Einsatzkommando Cobra, better known as EKO Cobra, is the counter-terrorist unit of the Austrian federal police. Founded to respond to high-risk situations such as kidnappings, terrorism or hostage rescue operations, this unit has historically been one of the most respected in Europe.

During the 1980s, some Cobra operators were looking for a pistol that could offer greater firepower in extremely close-range situations. In certain scenarios, such as interventions in confined spaces, an automatic pistol could provide a temporary advantage.

The response from the company Glock was the Glock 18. This model was based on the standard Glock 17 but incorporated a selector that allowed it to fire in automatic mode. This made it one of the few modern pistols capable of delivering automatic fire.
