The MP7 is probably one of the most “cult replicas” among airsoft players. But if you add that this Umarex model replicates the real one almost perfectly, and that the manufacturing of this gas version is handled by VegaForceCompany, it becomes a dream come true in the form of an airsoft replica.
1:1 replica
This MP7 was the first 1:1 scale replica of the real model. This put it ahead of models manufactured by other brands such as Tokyo Marui or KWA, whose bodies were smaller. Additionally, the VFC stock is the one that most closely resembles the real one. For reenactors, collectors, or simply fans of the real model, this was a decisive factor, along with the fact that it features licensed markings.
Design
Many police and military units opt for this submachine gun due to its power and compact design. The airsoft replica follows both lines. With a weight of 1.3 kg and a length of 415 mm (or 648 mm with the stock extended), it is perfect for moving through tight spaces such as corridors or CQB environments, or for carrying it as an alternative to a sniper rifle. In terms of power, the GBB system delivers a sharp recoil sensation similar to that of a CO2 pistol, but thanks to the grip and stock, it is much easier to maintain shooting stability. In VFC, this recoil is particularly notable, as they followed the path set by Marui with a system that offered greater recoil than what was available on the market at the time (this replica was produced several years ago).
Grip
This is one of the major differences between this first model and the later design released under the name H&K MP7 Navy, where this grip was replaced by a Wilcox rail (with RIS or MIL-STD-1913 rail), as developed in the real version at the request of the NSW community. This allowed users to attach their own pistol grip, such as the typical short Tango Down or any other preferred option.
In-game
As a gas blowback replica, its operation is similar to the real firearm. You need to insert a magazine loaded with BBs, pull the charging handle to bring the bolt back, leaving the hammer in firing position, and upon returning it will chamber the first BB. When the magazine runs empty, the bolt will lock back, and you will need to replace the magazine and press the bolt release to continue firing. The recoil produced by green gas is significant for such a compact replica, yet the grouping achieved at 30 meters is impressive for a replica with such a short inner barrel (182 mm). Keep in mind that ambient temperature plays a decisive role when using a gas replica.
Capacity
It has a capacity of 46 BBs (the real one holds 40 rounds, which is very close), and one of the few aspects we did not like about this replica is found here, as the last BBs in the magazine remain exposed and can collect dirt from the environment, affecting performance.
As a curious anecdote, when this replica was released years ago, we tested it with Vega (from VegaForceCompany, of course). He himself explained that gas replicas performed better with heavier BBs, or at least that was the case with his MP7. BB weight selection is an important part of optimizing a GBB replica, as it influences flight and grouping. Therefore, we consider that for a GBB user there are several key factors to keep in mind: ambient temperature, type of gas used, BB weight, and basic post-game maintenance to ensure a long lifespan of the replica.
Performance
Despite being a gas magazine, we were surprised to be able to fire the entire magazine (tested in both semi and full auto) without noticeable effects from gas cooling, or “cool down.” This is very important because gas replicas are affected not only by ambient temperature but also by rapid firing, as gas release cools the magazine and reduces performance. However, this was not the case here, as demonstrated in our shooting tests. Even so, filling the magazine with gas at home, at a higher temperature than on the field, will help improve GBB performance.
CONCLUSIONS
We’re not going to deny it—thinking about an MP7 is thinking about DEVGRU, and however you look at it, it’s just cool. On top of that, this GBB version features a recoil that you’ll fall in love with, with an average power of 315 FPS (21 ºC, green gas, and 0.20g BBs), making it perfect for CQB or as a secondary replica for snipers. And with Umarex licenses for H&K design and markings, you can be sure you’re getting one of the closest experiences to a Tier 1 operator’s MP7.
