WHAT IS AN AMBUSH?
An ambush is a surprise attack launched from concealed positions against a force that is moving or temporarily halted. This action reduces the enemy's combat effectiveness, with the advantage that it does not require the capture and permanent occupation of terrain.

TYPES OF ACTION
An ambush allows the following types of actions to be carried out:
Neutralization
This consists of the systematic elimination of players on the opposing side, forcing them to advance more slowly, remain under constant protection or assign more players to a specific task (thereby weakening their strength elsewhere), with the aim of achieving total or partial elimination of the enemy.
Harassment
The damage caused in these operations is lower than in the previous case, but it reduces the opposing team's effectiveness while forcing them to employ continuous security measures that restrict their movement. The goal is not to eliminate the enemy, but to slow them down or create confusion.
COMPOSITION OF AN AMBUSH PATROL
An ambush patrol is basically composed of the following elements:
1. Assault Force
The element that carries out the ambush itself.
2. Security Force
Responsible for protecting the assault force's perimeter against possible counterattacks. They are positioned behind and/or at the flanks of the assault force.
3. Reinforcements
The security force positioned behind the assault force is also responsible for providing replacement fighters if the assault force suffers casualties or requires additional personnel on the firing line.
RULES FOR SETTING UP AN AMBUSH
· Cover all possible routes by which the enemy may approach
· The enemy must be caught in a crossfire
· Look for areas where the enemy is forced to concentrate its personnel
· Know the enemy's escape routes
· Anticipate enemy reactions and possible counterattacks

COUNTER-AMBUSH PREPARATION
It is important to anticipate the enemy's reaction to the attack and cover terrain features through which a counterattack may be launched.
These areas can be covered by a single observer or by preparing elements that delay or warn of enemy presence in that sector, such as Claymore mines, Thunder mines, accessories or noise traps, etc.
BASIC AMBUSH AREAS
All points through which enemy players must pass due to mission requirements or terrain conditions should be considered:
· Mandatory routes within the game
· Areas surrounding objectives
· Routes from their respawn to the game objectives
· Strategic paths or access points

ORGANIZATION OF FIRE TEAMS
Airsoft ambushes are characterized by the speed of the action, and three situations may occur:
· The enemy is completely eliminated
· The enemy retreats or flees the attack area
· The enemy launches a counterattack
Taking these three possibilities into account, it is important to position each player according to their role in the most suitable locations for the ambush:

Riflemen
Positioned on the front firing line or kill zone, as they have replicas with the shortest engagement distances and because their rate of fire and mobility allow personnel to be shifted along the ambush line when necessary.

Designated Marksmen
Positioned behind the riflemen, they engage targets that are unreachable due to distance or cover. Riflemen must inform the marksmen whenever they cannot effectively engage these targets.

Support Gunners
Positioned at the edges of the kill zone, preventing the enemy team from entering or leaving the area. They should occupy defensible positions, as this role is less mobile than the rifleman.

Sniper
Positioned along enemy withdrawal or escape routes, their role is to eliminate selected targets and increase confusion during the enemy's retreat.
Once the team is in position, everyone must know the kill zone, meaning the area where all fire will be concentrated and the ideal point for the ambush.
TYPES OF AMBUSH
We are going to present three examples of ambushes. These will depend on the attacking team's objectives, and their deployment will vary according to available personnel and roles.
For these examples, we will use a seven-player team covering the main airsoft roles.
“L” Ambush
Let us assume the ambushing team wants to inflict the highest possible number of casualties and aims for the complete elimination of the enemy unit. To achieve this, all personnel are assigned to the assault force, accepting the risk of having no dedicated security force.
Assault Force
· Three riflemen (a): positioned close to the kill zone
· Two support gunners (b): covering the front and withdrawal routes
· One designated marksman (c): engages targets in cover or out of rifle range
· One sniper (d): positioned outside the area, covering withdrawal routes

"Line" Ambush
In this case, only the positions of some team members change.
Assault Force
Three riflemen deployed along the attack line covering the kill zone. Behind them, the designated marksman provides support.
Flank Security Force
Formed by the support gunners, responsible for covering the flanks and eliminating retreating enemies.
Rear Security Force
The sniper performs surveillance and reconnaissance duties in the rear.
Static Resources
These are positioned behind the kill zone along enemy escape routes.

“T” Ambush
The team is reorganized for a more flexible deployment.
Assault Force
Combination of specialists:
· Designated marksman on one flank
· Support gunner on the other flank
· Two riflemen as the mobile element
Flank Security Force
Formed by one rifleman and one support gunner, with a dual role:
· Protect the flanks
· Support the assault force
Rear Security Force
The sniper controls the rear area.
Static Resources
Placed on both sides of the kill zone to increase enemy attrition.

COUNTER-AMBUSH
Once you have learned how to set up an ambush, it is equally important to know how to react to one. Remaining static within the kill zone will result in casualties.
You must react quickly and aggressively:
· Advance using automatic fire
· Seek cover while moving toward the enemy
· Flank from the sides
The basis of a counter-ambush is forcing the enemy to abandon their positions through lateral pressure.

FINAL THOUGHT
Remember that in airsoft, a passive-defensive attitude usually leads to elimination, so react to aggression as quickly and decisively as possible.
The ambush is a technique with a long tradition, effective not only for eliminating the enemy but also for slowing them down, weakening them and creating constant uncertainty.
Good hunting...
